The Wicked and the Meek

The promise of shalom—God’s true peace—does not come through force. Psalm 37 assures us that evil has an expiration date.

"A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity." —Psalm 37:10-11 NIV

Jesus knew the Psalms well. When He stood on a mountainside and spoke to the crowds, His words echoed the ancient promises: "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:5 NIV)

In a world where power seems to belong to the ruthless, these words sound almost impossible. The meek? Those who do not grasp or demand, who do not fight for their own gain—how can they inherit anything, much less the earth?

But the promise of shalom—God’s true peace—does not come through force. Psalm 37 assures us that evil has an expiration date. It may seem dominant for a time, but it will fade like morning mist. The meek—those who trust, wait, and walk in God’s ways—will remain. They are not weak; they are rooted. They do not strive for control, because they know the earth already belongs to the Lord. And in Him, they are secure.

Jesus invites us to this way of trust. To lay down fear, to resist bitterness, to refuse the fight for dominance. The world will not be won by power plays but by the quiet, steady force of God’s kingdom.

Hold fast. The meek will stand when the storm has passed. And in the end, they will live in peace.

Prayer: Father, remind us in the turmoil of our world, we are called to a different way. A way of confidence, a knowing certainty that one day everything will be put to rights. That ultimately and eternally the meek, not the mighty, inherit the earth and live in your shalom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
